Most people give Agra half a day and leave thinking it’s ‘just the Taj’. It isn’t. Agra was the Mughal capital, and it rewards a little time. Here’s how we’d shape one, two or three days — the version we’d plan for our own family.
Agra in one day
Doable and still wonderful if you’re disciplined about the morning.
- Sunrise: the Taj Mahal as the gates open — the non-negotiable.
- Mid-morning: breakfast, then Agra Fort, the vast red-sandstone river fort where Shah Jahan spent his last years gazing at the Taj.
- Afternoon: Itmad-ud-Daulah, the exquisite ‘Baby Taj’, then a sunset view from Mehtab Bagh across the river.

Agra in two days
Two days is the version we actually recommend — you stop rushing and start enjoying.
- Day 1: Taj at sunrise, Agra Fort, and an unhurried afternoon — maybe the marble-inlay workshops where the Taj’s craft still lives.
- Day 2: a half-day to Fatehpur Sikri, the perfectly preserved Mughal capital abandoned after 15 years, an hour out of town. Back for a sunset and an old-Agra food walk — bedai, petha, Mughlai kebabs and the evening chaat lanes.
Agra in three days
With three days you can travel like a local rather than a tourist — add the quiet corners: Mehtab Bagh at both dawn and dusk, a rooftop chai with the dome filling the horizon, the ‘Baby Taj’ without a crowd, Sikandra (Akbar’s tomb) on the Delhi road, and time simply to wander the bazaars. Three days also lets you use Agra as a relaxed hinge between Delhi and Jaipur rather than a checkbox.
When to go & the Friday rule
