People agonise over this, so let’s make it simple. Both are beautiful. They’re just different moods, and the right one depends on the kind of morning — or evening — person you are.
Choose sunrise if…
You want the Taj at its calmest. The gates open with first light, the marble runs through grey-pink-gold-white in the space of half an hour, and the big groups haven’t arrived. It’s cooler, quieter and, honestly, the more photogenic of the two. The trade-off is an early alarm — worth every minute, we’d argue.
Choose sunset if…
You’re not a morning traveller, or you’re arriving into Agra later in the day. The late light is warmer and softer, the marble glows honey-gold, and there’s a gentle wind-down feeling as the crowds thin toward closing. It’s busier than sunrise but lovely in its own right.
The practical differences
The ticket is the same either way; it’s the clock and the crowd that change. For sunrise you want to be at the gate before it opens — we’ll have you there in the half-dark so you walk in with the first light. For sunset, aim to be inside about ninety minutes before closing, so you’re not hurried as the guards begin to clear the plinth. The east and west gates open earliest and the south gate a little later — exactly the sort of detail your guide handles so you don’t end up in the wrong queue.
For photographers
Sunrise gives you soft, directional light and — crucially — a near-empty forecourt for the classic reflecting-pool shot before the groups arrive. Sunset is warmer and moodier, but you’ll work harder for a clean frame in the heavier crowd. Either way, the pool-side and bench angles are calmest in the first and last thirty minutes; once you have the headline photo, the side gardens and the red mosque to the west reward a slow wander.

Does the season change the choice?
A little. In the cold months a dawn fog can sit over the river until eight or nine, so a clear winter sunset is sometimes the safer bet for a crisp view; in the heat of summer, sunrise isn’t just prettier but genuinely more comfortable, before the marble and the crowds warm up. We keep an eye on the forecast for you and nudge the plan if the morning looks grey — one of the quiet advantages of asking someone who lives here.
