Ladakh feels like another planet — a high-altitude desert cradled by the Himalaya, where centuries-old Buddhist monasteries cling to ochre cliffs, prayer flags snap in the thin air, and the roads climb to some of the highest drivable passes on earth. Beyond Leh lie the sand dunes and camels of the Nubra Valley and the surreal blue of Pangong Lake.
The altitude is real, and Ladakh must be paced properly — a day or two to acclimatise in Leh before you climb higher. That’s exactly how we plan it: sensible acclimatisation, the right permits for the restricted valleys, and local drivers who know these mountain roads intimately. Come for the landscapes; leave a little changed.
What to see & do in Leh-Ladakh
- Leh — the old town, palace and nearby monasteries, ideal for acclimatising.
- Thiksey, Hemis and Diskit — dramatic hilltop monasteries alive with ritual.
- The Nubra Valley — dunes, double-humped camels and remote villages over a high pass.
- Pangong Lake — the vast, colour-shifting Himalayan lake on the Tibetan frontier.
- Khardung La and the high passes — roads among the highest in the world.
- A monastery festival, if your dates align — masked dances and colour.
When to visit & altitude
Ladakh is accessible roughly May to September, when the passes are open. Altitude is the key: Leh sits above 3,500 m, so we build in acclimatisation days before going higher — it’s essential for a safe, enjoyable trip. Inner-line permits are needed for Nubra and Pangong, which we arrange.
