Evening border ceremony
Amritsar wears its heart wide open. At its centre floats the Golden Temple — Harmandir Sahib — a shrine of gold and marble set in a great tank of holy water, open to every visitor of every faith, day and night. Beside it runs the langar, a kitchen that serves a free meal to anyone who sits down, tens of thousands of them a day, cooked and cleaned by volunteers.
The city carries deeper notes too — the sobering memorial at Jallianwala Bagh, and, out at the Pakistan frontier, the flag-lowering ceremony at Wagah, half military drill and half roaring festival. Add some of the best food in India, and Amritsar becomes one of those places travellers are quietly reluctant to leave. Our Punjabi team helps you feel it, not just see it.
What to see & do in Amritsar
- The Golden Temple at dawn and after dark — when the gold glows over still water.
- The langar — sit, eat and, if you like, help in the world’s largest free kitchen.
- Jallianwala Bagh — the quiet, moving memorial garden beside the temple.
- The Wagah–Attari border ceremony — the theatrical evening flag-lowering.
- The old-city bazaars and the famous Amritsari food — kulcha, lassi and more.
- Partition Museum — a powerful, humane telling of 1947.
When to visit
October to March is the pleasant season — cool enough to enjoy the temple and stand comfortably at Wagah. Summers are hot; the monsoon is humid. The Golden Temple is serene very early and beautifully lit at night, so we plan visits at both ends of the day.
How Amritsar fits into your trip
Amritsar adds a soulful chapter to a North India journey — see our Golden Triangle with Golden Temple, which links Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Amritsar. It’s a short flight or comfortable train from Delhi, easily woven into a wider trip.
