There is nowhere in India quite like Varanasi — Banaras, to those who love it. Said to be among the oldest continuously lived-in cities on earth, it gathers along the Ganga in a great curve of stone steps, temples and cremation fires. At dawn, pilgrims wade into the river as the sun lifts over the far bank; at dusk, priests raise trays of fire to the water while bells and chants roll across the ghats.
It can overwhelm on a first visit — which is exactly why a local matters. Our Banaras guides know which lane leads where, which boatman to trust at sunrise, and where to stand for the aarti without losing the meaning of it. Nearby Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, adds a note of quiet to the intensity.
What to see & do in Varanasi
- A sunrise boat ride along the ghats as the city bathes and prays in the first light.
- The evening Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — fire, bells and devotion.
- A walk through the old-city lanes — temples, silk-weavers and hidden shrines.
- Kashi Vishwanath — the golden temple at the spiritual heart of the city.
- Sarnath — the peaceful deer park and stupa where the Buddha first taught.
- A Banarasi silk workshop — meet the weavers behind the famous saris.
- Rooftop chai over the river, away from the crowds.
When to visit
October to March is most comfortable, with mild days and atmospheric misty mornings on the river. Dev Deepawali (Nov) sees the ghats lit with thousands of lamps. Summers are very hot; the monsoon swells the Ganga and can limit boating.
How Varanasi fits into your trip
Varanasi pairs beautifully with the Golden Triangle — see our 10-day Golden Triangle & Varanasi, or the longer Khajuraho & Varanasi route. It’s a short flight from Delhi or Agra, and easily added to a wider North India journey.
Talk to a local, not a call centre
Varanasi rewards knowing. Ask us about the sunrise boat, where to watch the aarti, and how to see it all respectfully. A Banaras local replies within the hour.
