We get this question every week, and the answer isn’t in a guidebook — it’s in living here. The Taj Mahal is open sunrise to sunset every day except Friday, but “when to go” is really two questions: which season, and which hour.
The season
October to March is the kind season. Mornings are cool, the sky is usually clear, and the marble looks its best against soft winter light. April and May get fierce — 44°C is not unusual — so if you come in summer, go at first light and be done before the heat lands. The monsoon (July–September) brings dramatic skies and fewer visitors, and a rain-washed Taj has a quiet all its own.
The hour
Sunrise, every time, if you can manage it. The gates open with the first light, the coach crowds haven’t arrived, and for about forty minutes you get the monument almost gently to yourself. We plan our Taj sunrise & sunset tour around exactly this window.
A local’s note on Fridays
The Taj is closed on Fridays for prayers — a surprising number of travellers only find that out at the gate. If Friday is your only Agra day, we’ll simply flip the plan: Agra Fort, the ‘Baby Taj’ and Mehtab Bagh across the river, where the view of the Taj is arguably the most romantic of all.
