The fast trains are the sweet spot for a day trip. The Gatimaan Express — India’s fastest — does Delhi (Hazrat Nizamuddin) to Agra Cantt in about 100 minutes; the Shatabdi is similar. You get a comfortable AC seat, breakfast on board, and you arrive rested and on time for the Taj at opening. The catch: fixed departure times and you need to book ahead. By private car
A private AC car takes roughly 3.5–4.5 hours each way on the Yamuna Expressway, traffic depending. The upside is total flexibility — leave when you like, stop where you like, add Fatehpur Sikri or Sikandra en route, and no station transfers. As part of a multi-day tour
If Agra is one stop on a bigger trip, the smart move is not to day-trip at all — you sleep in Agra, catch the Taj at sunrise properly, see Agra Fort without rushing, and drive on to Jaipur the next day. That’s the classic 3-day Golden Triangle rhythm, and it’s far more relaxed than any same-day dash.
By bus
Volvo AC coaches run Delhi–Agra and are the cheapest option, but they’re slow (4–6 hours with stops), tied to the coach schedule, and drop you at a bus stand still short of the monuments. For most international travellers the small saving isn’t worth the lost time and comfort.
